Coiste Glas
This year has been a great year for our schools’ Coiste Glas (Green Schools Committee). We have received our second Green schools Flag which represents the theme ‘Energy’. We have improved on reducing the amount of electricity and gas we use in the school. We make sure that every classroom contributes to this by closing doors, turning off lights and switching off all electrical appliances every evening at home time. This has been of great benefit to our environment. We have reduced the cost of the schools bills too!
We took part in Be Active week as well this year. This encouraged us to walk or cycle to school as often as possible. Another great way to help the environment.
We got our Litter and Waste flag in 2010. We still continue to work on reducing litter and waste in school. This year we have taken part in the National Spring Clean focusing on our own school grounds and the Bánóg area across from our school. The children from fourth and fifth class took part in cleaning up all the litter.
We still continue to recycle a lot of waste such as, batteries, ink cartridges, paper, plastics, stamps and organic waste. The organic waste has been very helpful as we have taken some of the compost to use in our new school garden. We set up the school garden this year. We planted potatoes, onions, turnips and carrots. We also planted some flowers and fruit trees too.
Tá coiste ghlas againn i Scoil Ui Riada. Bunaíodh an coiste chun áird na bpaistí ar dhíriú ar athchúrsáil agus caomhnú na timpeallachta. Tá foireann agus daltaí na scoile ag co-oibriú le chéile an t-am ar fad.
We also got an ‘Outdoor Classroom’ this year. Dara Wyer from Kildare County Council helped us get this great resource. Teachers take the class or small groups out to do lessons on a nice, sunny day!
